Newborn Photography ~ BABY'S SAFETY ALWAYS COMES FIRST!

After hearing a couple of horror stories in the last 2 days of untrained newborn photographers and people doing these shots at home without safety measures and specified training in newborn photography I thought I would do a quick blog post on the dangers involved.

I, along with many other newborn photographers have invested a lot of time and money in to learning the tricks and techniques of newborn photography, so I am not going to give all the secrets away, this post is to warn of the dangers and risks some people will take. Things are not always what they seem and these set ups take time, effort and patience to create.

There is a lot of safety preparations, spotters and photoshop composites involved in the creation of these images. There are people holding these babies that you just can't see. While the image of babies hanging from branches in slings and propped up in cute little poses are adorable and so very tempting to try, my advice is, if you want to do these poses... Get specific training in this area. The most amazing image is not worth the safety of a newborn or the lawsuit if things go horribly wrong, these are people after all, not props. Do not think that all babies will sit with their head propped up on their hands unaided and never suspend a baby from a hammock or sling at a height above a floor or any other hard surface. You can never trust a sling or hammock 100%. Knots can come undone and babies can fall if proper care is not taken. Even in some shots where baby looks all snug curled up in Daddy's hand can be dangerous if done at a height and without support, all it takes is for baby's heavy head to tilt and everything gets thrown off balance.

Another thing to keep in mind when using props to hang a baby in, is baby's weight. You want to be sure that what you are using is designed to hold the weight of the baby and NEVER put more than one baby in something designed for a single newborn.

If you have not had the training and do not have the safety methods to use, please stick to safer newborn poses curled up in little balls in cocoons or sleeping safely in a cushion or a photography prop beanbag until you have had the training required and you have the necessary safety items available to you.

Newborn photography as a whole is not as simple as many photographers make it look. Babies do not work on our schedule and there are many tricks involved to getting a newborn to that sleepy state that take place before the session even starts. Of course, sometimes you get lucky and get a dream baby that just sleeps through the whole session anyway! ;)

Please keep baby safety your number 1 priority, wether you are the photographer or the parent!

So many Photographers... Who do I choose?

Photography is something many people love, everyone appreciates and so many people want to have photographic art of their family to hang on their wall.

Some people may see a special offer from a Photographer and jump on it!

Others may see an image and fall in love with it, seeing their own family in the photograph so book with that Photographer.

Then there are people who want something specific and shop around.

There are so many Photographers here in Adelaide alone, so choosing the right Photographer can be a daunting task.

I'm not about to tell you who is better, who will save you money or what to watch out for. The truth is every Photographer has a different style to every other. Some props may be the same, or there may be similar products and settings, but the flair of EVERY Photographer is so different if you really look!

It's just a matter of finding a Photographer who has the style, flair and creativity that is suited to YOUR taste. Everyone's taste is different, everyone has different needs, different desires and I'm quite positive there is a Photographer to cater for absolutely everyone. There is no harm in asking a Photographer for a specific request you might have. The worst they can do is say no. Then you move on to the next one, but I am quite sure most Photographers are up for a challenge and would love the opportunity to try something different.

So, with all these Photographers out there, who do you choose...????

Referrals - Ask family and friends who they have booked with. Did they like the overall experience? Are they happy with the end product? Satisfied customers are more than happy to recommend a Photographer.

Check out their website - Does their style suit your taste? Does it match your personality? Do you prefer studio shots or candid outdoor shots for your family?

Contact - Contact the Photographer and gauge their personality. Is it someone who you could get along with? You will be spending some time with them after all, you want to be comfortable with your Photographer to get the best out of your session!

Price - What packages do they offer? What pricing structures do they offer? Are they within your budget or do they offer long payment options?

Determining the answers to these questions will help you in your final decision of who you will pay to capture these moments for you. Photographs last a life time and you are paying good money for them. You want to make sure it is suited to you and your family!

Why the investment in a professional baby photographer is worth it...

      The decision to have a child is momentous. Another life is brought to the world. Every second of life is worth cherishing, it makes a lot of sense to capture these precious moments early on in life as we never get these moments back, we are only left with memories or photographs of memories.

I have 3 children of my own so I know the importance of having good photographs of babies. I made the mistake with my first child, waiting till he was bigger before I had professional photos taken (other than the ones in hospital). Even though I had photography experience, I did not have the equipment back then, nor did I have the specified expertise in newborn photography. He was so tiny so in all of the photos I have of him he is so small you can hardly see him, if I got any closer he was out of focus. By my next child I had a much better camera and was able to take much better photos, though I still did not have the training in newborn photography. I still have some nice images to hold onto, but looking back I wish that I had just paid a professional newborn photographer to capture the tiny details. How small he was, from his button nose to his tiny little toes.

Now after having training specifically in newborn photography I can see for myself the hard work that goes into capturing these images. It's not all about having the best camera and a back drop, it's handling the baby, timing everything just right, setting up studio equipment perfectly, incorporating Mum, Dad and siblings and knowing how to deal with a fussy newborn.

I now have a guide I give Mum's of newborns to ensure baby is well settled for the session and allowing plenty of time, as babies do not run on our clock (any parent would know this), we need to work around them.

The best time to photograph a newborn is before 10 days of age. This doesn't mean it should not be done after, it only means this window of opportunity is greatest for capturing those beautiful sleepy shots as baby sleeps the majority of the time and in most cases is easier to settle. Sometimes Mum's and Dad's need to be a distance from the baby for him/her to settle. The scent of the parents can sometimes make baby feel insecure knowing it's not Mum or Dad holding him/her.

There are a lot of little tricks with setting the mood and getting the baby in a relaxed state, once achieved the outcome can be nothing short of amazing!

Once a baby gets to around 8-12 weeks of age, they generally become fussy and this can become a more challenging session. Less sweet sleepy shots and the majority of the session is spent rocking baby back to sleep rather than taking photos. So overall, for value for money, before 4 weeks of age would be my suggestion.

I had a session today, Mr 7 weeks just wanted to be awake and check out what was going on. Too knowing at this age, he knew something was going on and he didn't want to miss a trick! It did make it more challenging for me, but we got creative and some stunning shots were the result of the session. Something original and fun!


There are little tricks for babies and children of all ages, but the biggest one of all is to let them do what they do best... Have fun! Capture them as who they are today, doing what they love. Real smiles, not forced smiles. The candid shots as they look back over their shoulder at you to see if you are watching them. Capture them discovering the world and it's beauty for the first time. Many people will comment that they never get good photos of their kids, Children behave differently to a stranger. They are more likely to listen and follow simple instructions. In some cases they want to show me things, which is great! The way I interact with the children plays a huge part in the end product. Having 3 of my own helps, I can read their key signals when they have had enough and it's time to play.


I have also learnt how to get a shy child to feel comfortable with me. Time is always left for this in my sessions. It is very important. 

I am constantly updating my skills and training, as well as learning new ones from every newborn, infant and child I photograph, every single one is so unique they each have something new to teach me. 

While some people may feel that newborn photography is over priced, with the time and cost involved with the experience and training and the beautiful memories you get to cherish for generations to come, in my opinion is something money can't buy! Looking back when your babies are grown and their babies are having babies, you too will agree it was the best money you could have spent.
